Inter-ed's Fisheries Division is led by David
Thomson. David has experience in over 50 countries, and has taught
in and helped to develop training and extension services, schools and
colleges, universities and research centres.
He has written several books and many technical reports on fisheries
operation and fishery development and management. He was recently recruited
by FAO to undertake one of the five global case studies on coastal fishing
communities which are being prepared as part of the follow-up to the Kyoto
conference in December 1995. He gave the keynote address at a recent Irish
national conference on fishery management, and was guest speaker on fishery
matters at the Marine Laboratory Aberdeen, and at the Centre for Human
Ecology, University of Edinburgh.

Inter-ed's services in the fishery field include:
- Preparing strategic development and management plans.
- Designing programmes of technical training and professional education.
- Undertaking institutional development and staff training.
- Compiling teaching materials, and writing course texts.
- Facilitating professional qualifications and accreditation.
- Investigating social and environmental aspects of fisheries.
- Maximising employment and economic benefits from investments.
- Preparing feasibility studies and project documents.
- Protecting artisanal fishermen and enhancing the marine environment.
- Designing programmes to maximise opportunities for women and youth.
- Preparing integrated development projects and programmes.
- Organising mutually beneficial co-operation between large and small
scale fishing groups and ancillary industry.
- Arranging study tours and studies abroad.
- Planning and managing conferences, seminars and workshops.
- Undertaking commercial fisheries feasibility studies.
- Assisting establishment of joint ventures.
- Locating and identifying markets for fish and fish products.
- Planning quality control and quality assurance systems and procedures.
- Running specific courses or training programmes.

Experience
Inter-ed's Directors have a wide range of experience in fisheries projects.
For example:
- Inter-ed staff designed the training programmes and arranged for accreditation
for the industry and government training colleges in Namibia, which now has
one of the most advanced and successful fishing industries in all of Africa.
- The SADC (Southern African Development Community) fisheries policy and strategic
plan for fisheries in the region, was drafted by Inter-ed staff, and approved
and accepted by all eleven member states.
- Iceland's aid organisation, ICEIDA, recruited Inter-ed to evaluate its ten
year programme of assistance to Cape Verde and its fisheries, and to recommend
activities for the future.
- Inter-ed's directors were asked to provide high level advice on future fishery
development work to Canada, the Arab Emirates, Sri Lanka, Papua New Guinea,
and Indonesia.
- The Inter-ed Fisheries Director recently worked on projects in the Marshall
Islands, Ghana, Nigeria, Bolivia, and Turkmenistan, as well as in the United
Kingdom and Ireland.
- A strategic planning manual was prepared for UNIDO, as a textbook for the
training and guidance of consultants preparing integrated development projects
for a range of industrial fields including fisheries.
- A sea training manual was prepared for the cadet programme operated jointly
by the Namibian fishing industry, and the Walvis Bay fisheries institute.
- Fisheries development, fisheries management, and fisheries education have
been a focus of Inter-ed activities since its inception.

Inter-ed directors and specialists have worked for UNIDO, the United Nations
Industrial Development Organisation, in Vienna, Austria; for SADC, the Southern
African Development Community; for ADB, the Asian Development Bank; for
FAO, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations; and for
the bilateral aid organisations and agencies of Iceland, Germany, Italy,
Ireland, and the European Union. |
